Is it easier to learn English in childhood?
- Many people think that it is easier to learn a language in childhood, which is true for the most part, only if you are surrounded by the language. In other words, if a child is spoken to in two languages every day, he or she will certainly speak both of them. If we put an adult person in the same conditions, they won't be able to learn English as fast as kids. However, what if we use a typical situation for our example? A kid studies English only at school, but doesn't use it in everyday life; a teacher can't motivate the kid to study, so in the end, the result is dissapointing. So, if we don't take extremes like really talented and dedicated learners, we have a person who literally can't make a sentence.
Forget the language learning experience that you had at school! Now, you are the boss!
- But what about adult learners. Again, a typical situation: there is a chance to get a new, well-paid job, which English is required for. This is a great motivation tool for an adult, who knows perfectly well what benefits English can provide. That's why the results are much better. About 85% of students of the author of this text are adults aged from 30 to 60. A new job is not the only reason why they study English. Many of them regularly travel abroad. And English is necessary even to ask how to get somewhere and, most importantly, to understand the answer. My oldest student was 78 years old when she just started learning! Her son had gone to the US, and she wanted to visit him. She needed English to feel confident. Sure thing, she had difficulties memorizing some words, but at the end of the day, she spoke pretty well, which was a huge success for her age!

"This is not mine"
- One of the most popular excuses not to start learning is so-called «absence of talent for English». Look, you don’t need to be extremely talented; you don’t need to have philological degree. Anyone is capable of learning a language. Yes, every student has his or her own results, they all are different. But if you set real goals, you will reach them! Anyone can learn to play the guitar. Maybe, you are not the next Hendrix, but you can learn to play pretty well.
- Life experience is a great advantage that adult learners have. A kid may attend classed for years and never even realize that he or she doesn’t like them. And their parents can’t even check them. You can try the method; see if you like the teacher and decide whether it is what you need. You know your goals better that anyone, so you can work on reaching them rather that doing something completely useless.
- A child is really hard to convince to study, especially if he or she doesn’t want to. An adult understands that concentration is very important during lessons, because if you don’t do your best, you will just waste money and time. Such arguments don’t usually work with kids.

Learning English is not boring!
- One more important thing: forget the language learning experience that you had at school! Now, you are the boss! You are the one who chooses the time, the teacher and so on.
- Learning English today is not as boring as it once used to be. Learning words and transcriptions, reading boring texts, countless grammar exercises – these things are long gone!
